The Choir

Music in the Church

St Mary’s Choir

We are a small, friendly four-part choir. We have a wide repertoire and sing a variety of settings and an anthem each week for the 11am Sung Eucharist service. Our choice of music ranges from the 16th to the 21st century and we sing both accompanied and unaccompanied. Practices take place on Thursday evenings for an hour and we meet half an hour before services. We particularly enjoy preparing for and singing at the big church festivals – Easter, Advent and the Nine Lessons and Carols at Christmas, when we augment the choir.
When we are not singing we enjoy social activities which have included trips to the theatre, concerts and meals out. The barbecue has become an annual event and marks the end of our singing year as we have a six-week break in the summer.
We would welcome new members. It helps if you can read music but the ability to sing in tune is more important. We have one school-age singer who would love some company of her own age, too. If you would like to contribute to the worship at St. Mary’s please contact us or come along to a practice.

The Organ

The organ was gifted by the Don family in 1886 and comprises Great, Swell and Pedal. Full specifications are available on request. It was enlarged in 1892 and electric action installed in 1950. J.M. Walker and Sons of Suffolk overhauled the organ in 1982.

By a congregational decision at the AGM in November 2005, it was agreed, after much discussion, that we should raise funds for a complete refurbishment of the organ to prolong its use in the traditional liturgical worship of the church which is one of St. Mary's great strengths.
